The New Nintendo 2DS XL was a clamshell-design handheld video game console and the final model in Nintendo’s 3DS family of systems. It was released in 2017, offering a more affordable option than the New Nintendo 3DS XL by removing the 3D functionality while retaining the larger screens and faster processor.
Features and design
The New Nintendo 2DS XL was built to appeal to a wider market by combining the most popular aspects of the 2DS and New 3DS XL into a more ergonomic and portable device.
- No 3D Display: As its name suggests, the console displayed all games in 2D only.
- Clamshell Design: Unlike the wedge-shaped, non-folding original 2DS, the New Nintendo 2DS XL featured the more popular folding clamshell design.
- Large Screens: The console utilized the same large, 4.88-inch top screen and 4.18-inch bottom screen as the New Nintendo 3DS XL, making it a significant upgrade from the original 2DS.
- Enhanced Performance: It included the upgraded processor found in the New 3DS, which enabled faster performance, improved camera quality, and the ability to play exclusive “New 3DS” titles.
- Additional Controls: Like the New 3DS, it featured a C-Stick (a second, smaller analog nub) and extra ZL/ZR shoulder buttons for expanded control options in certain games.
- Amiibo Support: A built-in NFC reader was included in the lower screen, allowing players to use Amiibo figures and cards with compatible games.
Backwards compatibility
One of its strongest features was its immense game library. The
New Nintendo 2DS XL could play games from several generations of Nintendo handhelds.

Legacy and discontinuation
The
New Nintendo 2DS XL arrived late in the 3DS family’s lifecycle, launching after the Nintendo Switch. While praised for its design and feature set, it was eventually discontinued as Nintendo shifted its focus to the hybrid console.

- Commercial Success: Despite a smaller sales footprint than earlier 3DS models, it sold 4.8 million units during its lifespan.
