The Nintendo Switch is a seventh-generation hybrid video game console released by Nintendo in March 2017. It is defined by its versatile design, which allows it to function as both a home console and a portable handheld device.
Hybrid design and versatility
The console can be used in three main configurations:
- TV Mode: The main tablet is placed in a dock connected to a television, allowing for traditional gaming with a controller.
- Handheld Mode: The tablet is used as a portable handheld device, with the detachable Joy-Con controllers sliding onto either side of the screen.
- Tabletop Mode: The console’s built-in kickstand is used to prop up the screen on a flat surface, with the Joy-Con controllers detached for multiplayer.
Key hardware features
- Joy-Con Controllers: The two controllers can be used independently in each hand, attached to the console for handheld play, or combined with a grip accessory to function as a single traditional controller. They include an accelerometer and gyro-sensor for motion control and provide tactile feedback through HD Rumble.
- Touchscreen: The tablet features a capacitive multi-touch screen, which can be used for gameplay and menu navigation.
- Storage: The original model includes 32 GB of internal storage, which is expandable via microSD card.
- Media: Games are available on small physical game cards and via digital distribution through the Nintendo eShop.
Models and revisions
- Original Switch (2017): The standard hybrid console model. An updated version released in August 2019 featured a more power-efficient Nvidia Tegra processor, significantly increasing battery life.
- Nintendo Switch Lite (2019): A handheld-only version of the console that does not connect to a TV. It is smaller, lighter, and has integrated controls, though it can still connect wirelessly to standard Joy-Cons.
- Nintendo Switch OLED Model (2021): An upgraded model featuring a larger, 7-inch OLED screen with more vibrant colors, a wider adjustable stand, a new dock with a built-in LAN port, and 64 GB of internal storage.
Success and significance
The Switch was a major commercial success, selling over 150 million units worldwide by the end of 2024.
- Revitalization of Nintendo: It reversed the commercial failure of its predecessor, the Wii U, and became Nintendo’s best-selling home console ever.
- Diverse game library: The console built a strong library of both first-party exclusives, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, and third-party and indie titles.
