Nintendo DSi XL – 2008 – 2012

The Nintendo DSi XL (known as the Nintendo DSi LL in Japan) was the fourth and final model in the Nintendo DS family of handheld consoles. Released in 2009 in Japan and 2010 worldwide, it was an oversized version of the Nintendo DSi, featuring larger screens, an improved stylus, and a focus on communal, “tabletop” gaming.

Key features

  • Larger screens: The DSi XL’s most prominent feature was its 4.2-inch screens, which were 93% larger than the screens on the DS Lite. While the resolution remained the same as the DSi, the wider viewing angle was specifically marketed to allow people surrounding the player to see the action more easily.
  • Improved battery life: The DSi XL included a larger battery than the standard DSi, offering an extra 1 to 3 hours of gameplay, depending on the brightness settings.
  • Larger, pen-like stylus: In addition to a standard stylus that fit inside the console, the DSi XL came bundled with a larger, thicker, pen-like stylus that was more comfortable for many users.
  • DSi features: The XL retained all the features of the standard DSi, including the two cameras, the SD card slot for expandable storage, and access to the DSiWare Shop for downloading games and applications.
  • Matte finish: Unlike the glossy finish of the standard DSi, the DSi XL featured a matte finish on the underside to improve grip when resting the console on a surface.
